The National Institute for Health Research Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care - Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland (NIHR CLAHRC for LNR)
The United Kingdom is one of the leading nations in health research in the world with significant achievements in the field including 10 Nobel prizes for medicine. The outcomes of this research have the ability to transform the way healthcare is delivered, improve patient outcomes and be more cost effective. However, the NHS needs to make better use of this research in its day to day practice.
The NIHR CLAHRC-LNR aims to overcome the barriers to implementing research by bringing together all the local NHS Trusts in a unique partnership with the University of Leicester. It is part of a five year programme to ensure that the lessons learnt from research studies are rapidly and effectively put into practice. There are great opportunities for NIHR CLAHRC–LNR to support and inform Trusts to both commission and provide services that are evidence based, known to work and are cost effective. Simultaneously we will be working hard with Trusts to improve their own internal research knowledge and capacity so that they can ensure research is built into how they work, not bolted on afterwards.
This is a truly collaborative venture where the strategic health priorities of Trusts have driven the research studies that have been developed. They focus mainly on the care of people with long term conditions and are designed to follow five main themes of:
- Prevention
- Early detection
- Education and Self-management
- Rehabilitation
- Implementation
I am confident that NIHR CLAHRC–LNR will make a significant positive impact on the health of the people of our region and contribute in no small way to a better understanding of the mechanisms to how that improvement can be sustained.
